Almost 30,000 people visited the Police Museum in 2016, once again breaking the previous year’s record.

“We had a successful year 2016. The Police Museum has claimed its place among popular destinations in Tampere. We attracted even more visitors this year than in 2015, when we also broke our previous record. In the summer, the museum attracted families in particular,” says Tiina Tuulasvaara-Kaleva , the museum’s new intendant.

New exhibition opens in the spring

The year 2017 will bring many changes to the Police Museum. The museum’s new intendant, MA Tiina Tuulasvaara-Kaleva started working in January. The intendant manages and develops the operations of the Police Museum and acts as the supervisor of the museum team. Tuulasvaara-Kaleva has worked as a curator at the Police Museum since 2004.

March 2017 will see the launch of a new special exhibition called Public order collapses - 1917. “When hatred became a virtue and revenge a merit” . The exhibition explores the events of 1917, the year Finland gained independence. These events led to a situation where there was no single, generally accepted body to maintain public order. The museum will also launch a new online exhibition in the spring, showcasing photographs that illustrate the work of the police forces of an independent Finland.

Parts of the museum’s basic exhibition, opened in 2008, have been taken down to make room for the new special exhibition.

“The museum offers plenty of things to see and experience, although a section of the exhibition space is reserved for the construction of the new exhibition. The popular special exhibition Demanding situations and the use of force will continue until the end of 2017. The Pokela police station, children’s very own section in the museum, will continue to offer many things to do for younger visitors. In Pokela, children can try on a police uniform and play with police toys.”

The Police Museum is located in Tampere, adjacent to the Police University College. This year, it opens for the public on 10 January.
