What did the police uniform look like in the early years of Finland's independence? What did the gentleman police officer's uniform consist of? When did patrol officers start wearing coveralls?

The Police Museum is frequently asked these questions, and the new online exhibition will now provide the answers. Called From Breeches to Coveralls - The history of Finnish Police Uniforms , the exhibition shows how the police uniform has evolved from the 19th century to the present day.

“The online exhibition features pictures, with explanations, of various items such as coveralls and driving outfits, head gear, footwear, and coats. Visitors can study the history of the police uniform on a timeline, or by theme,” explains Panu Rissanen , Curator at Police Museum.

From military to practical style

The first regulations regarding the uniforms of civil servants working in the police force were issued in the 19th century. In the late 1800s, police work became more professional in the towns, and the police uniform gained a more consistent and military appearance.

“Our online exhibition focuses on the 1900s - the time when the uniform changed several times following political changes and active efforts to create work clothing for government officials. Gradually, the military style gave way to more practical elements.”
